Integrating a Third Bedroom

The owners of this house wanted to address a number of issues to make their home better accommodate a growing family. They mainly needed a third bedroom on the main floor, but they could also see that the main bath had a number of shortcomings, which would result in one-at-a-time use.
The master bath also had its own set of problems. The separate vanity bases made for disconnected counter space. Plus a diagonal partial wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom made the whole suite a bit awkward. To top it all off, the bathroom had an exterior door with a window that looked on to the neighbor’s house, making the couple feel uncomfortable for obvious reasons.
My design called for converting the main bathroom into the third bedroom and adding a window seat. The master bathroom and closet became the new main bath. With its two sinks, ample counter space, and separate room with toilet and shower, the new bathroom easily allows multiple people to use it at the same time. An awkward den became the new master bathroom and closet. A pocket door at the top of the stairwell insulates the noise from the in-home theater in the basement from the rest of the house. Having two fireplaces in the living room was a bit superfluous, so we removed one, allowing more wall space for the placement of furniture and wall hangings.
